Mel: All of the icons on my desktop changed to utorrent files and now they won’t work?
I am doing this from my iPod because all of my browsers have been turned into these utorrent files and they won’t work so I can’t use downloads. Restarting my computer (as in putting it back to factory settings) is not a option. How do I undo these changes to my desktop icons? Step by step please.
Do I have to reset my whole computer?
Mac or PC?
It’s clearly not the icons that have changed, but their extensions. So (for Windows) go to Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View
and then untick the box that says “Hide extensions for known file types”
(If you can’t find “Folder Options” in Control Panel, change View by (top right) from “Category” to “Small icons”)
On your desktop you should now see the file types as well, but I’m guessing they’re all .torrent now?
Assuming a yes on that question, you can quickly fix you browser by just changing that extension to .exe
Don’t change the name as well… just the extension is necessary.
Unfortunately I don’t know the cause of this, why this happened, but you can fix it manually.
If all the extensions are not .torrent, and they are in fact, as they should be, just right click on the icon, and go to “open with” and select the appropriate program from the list.
If you have shortcuts, they shouldn’t have extensions.
Hm… it seems that this is a common problem. Check out these links, maybe some of them have a better solution:
